Ty Dolla $ign Was 'Trying to Achieve Greatness' Working With Kanye West on 'Ego Death'

Ty Dolla $ign just released his new song “Ego Death” on Wednesday (July 1), a mega collaboration with Kanye West, FKA Twigs and Skrillex. Turns out there’s a specific reason why he wanted to team up with Ye.

“I was just trying to achieve greatness,” he told Apple Music’s Zane Lowe in a new interview. “Every time me and Ye get together, I feel like we just make something great. So I just do my part.”

The “Treehouse” rapper added that the Yeezy designer is “a very unpredictable person,” but that he is too himself, which makes their collabs successful. “Every time we get together, it just works. So it’s a blessing, man. Shout-out to my bro.”

Ty also shared that “Ego Death” had its beginnings at a party. “I heard some girls saying something about some guy, like, ‘Oh, that’s the death of his ego.'” he explained. “I remembered that when I got to the house. I’m like, ‘Wow, that’s hard.’ It’s like I had the song ‘Ego Death,’ and then I made the beat.”

As for how West became involved, Ty said he saw a video on Instagram of the “Wash Us in the Blood” rapper walking through Chicago. “He was like, ‘Hold up. There’s a train going by.’ I thought that was so hard,” Ty explained. He ended up sampling that part and later played it for Ye.

“He went crazy,” Ty shared of West’s reaction when they were together in Chicago. “He grabbed the little performance mic, and he started beatboxing and just freestyling and s–t. We recorded all that, kept all that.”

In regards to how he ended up working with FKA Twigs and Skrillex, he explained that it took a few trips. “I ended up going to London. I linked up with Twigs. She laid her part, went crazy, and then I came back to L.A. and hooked up with [Skrillex]. He added his magic, and now we have the song. So it was definitely a process.”
