'It’s a mixtape, I don’t even know how!' Lanez tells Billboard of the achievement.
Tory Lanez scores his third No. 1 on Billboard’s Top Rap Albums chart, as The New Toronto 3 debuts on the list dated April 25. The set earned 64,000 equivalent album units earned in the week ending April 16, according to Nielsen Music/MRC Data.
The project, the third in the Canadian rapper-singer’s mixtape series, is the first to reach any Billboard chart. The original Toronto was released in 2015, while the second installment followed in 2017.
Before Toronto 3, Lanez reigned on Top Rap Albums with his studio debut, I Told You, in 2016 and Love Me Now? In 2018. Between the pair, he also logged a No. 2 peak with his 2017 album, Memories Don’t Die.
“It’s a mixtape, I don’t even know how!” Lanez tells Billboard of the achievement, half-joking about much lower expectations. “I didn’t promote it. I put it the cover to it like a week before it came out. I thought it was gonna sell like 10,000.”
With more than six times that, Toronto 3’s 64,000-unit start marks the best weekly total for any of Lanez’s rap efforts. Only last year’s R&B project, Chixtape 5, surpassed the haul with its 83,000-unit entrance last November.
Toronto 3 concurrently starts at No. 2 on the Billboard 200 and Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums charts, beneath The Weeknd’s After Hours on both lists.
Streaming activity from Toronto 3 spills over to the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart. There, Lanez claims the week’s top debut as “Stupid Again” opens at No. 23, while “Broke in a Minute” and “Who Needs Love” follow at Nos. 28 and 47, respectively. The trio push Lanez to 17 career entries on the ranking.
