PlayStation’s Streetwear Collections Aren’t Playing Around

After thirty years of being a leading video game brand, PlayStation has decided to spread its wings and become a permanent streetwear fixture.

With the help of football lifestyle brand F.C.Real Bristol and the Japanese fashion label SOPH. (two regular collaborators) PlayStation is releasing its second retro football-inspired collection of the year. And this one comes with an extra slice of nostalgia.

To celebrate PlayStation’s 30th anniversary — the company’s first console, the PlayStation 1 (or PS1, as it is most commonly known) was released in 1994 — it has let F.C. Real Bristol and SOPH. use the original Playstation logo.

The multi-colored PS branding, instantly recognizable to gamers of a certain generation, features across a range of tracksuits and football shirts rendered in the same gray color as the PS1.

While PlayStation branding is the sponsor for the fictitious football team’s shirt, the back of the top aptly includes the number 30 to celebrate the company’s milestone.

Plus, beyond wearable clothes, there is a pillow, a grey rubber duck, and footballer figurines made with MEDICOM TOY as part of the drop. The full release arrives on December 3, the same day the PS1 was first released thirty years ago, available from the Sony Park Mini space in Tokyo, Japan before a wider online release.

PlayStation has been working hard securing its status as the gaming console most aligned with streetwear. Its ultra-rare Nike collabs are certified grails (and, potentially, making a comeback soon) while its link-ups with Balenciaga and BEAMS proves it has the pulling power to entice notable fashion brands.

Slowly, we have to start asking the question: is PlayStation… streetwear?
