Chalumeau has returned with their latest single, “Hide,” a fiery rock track that will not cease. The song is full of confrontation and betrayal. With its fiery beginning its unrelenting drive, “Hide” transforms emotion into energizing sound.
The song does not hesitate to establish an atmosphere. Hide noises from the first note itself, such as an inquisition—brutal, instant, and unyielding. Bergeron’s vocals craft a path through sound with ice-pick precision, spitting out lines such as “Was that the best you could do? Were you a friend?” as if torched on fire. The song is as much of a punchline to the stomach, communicating anger and disillusionment on the behalf of a cheated and left-for-dead lover to build in shards what she knows no more.
“Hide” is the moment you slip and reveal a truth you wouldn’t have liked to hear. “You thought I should be glad of your sad luck story. But now that I see you, you can’t hide,” Bergeron snarls with anger and pain. No finesse here; every line a charge, every word a demand for justice.
The accompanying video for “Hide” is also breathtaking. The lyric video, full of reds, features images of figures sprinting through cold, blackened streets—a beautiful metaphor for running towards light and the futility of trying to escape reality. It’s a narrative visually rendered in the same manner that says, “You can run, but you can’t hide”.
Born of a pandemic road trip, the song was composed out of feelings of isolation and emotional strain. Initially, the idea was loose, but it quickly grew into something deeply personal for Bergeron and Rovan.
Chalumeau has never been a pair that relishes creative tension, and “Hide” is not an exception. Bergeron’s classical education and lyrical sophistication, with Rovan’s cutting-edge sound, create music that makes you think and makes you confront your truths.
