With an MTV Video Music Award win in her back pocket, and choreographing for the likes of Dua Lipa, Kendrick Lamar, The Weeknd, and Madonna on her resume, you might think Charm La’Donna is satisfied with her position as one of the premier choreographers in the music business.
Not unlike Michael Jordan jumping from basketball to baseball following a three-peat, the Compton native has decided to open up and share her own art with the world. Charm is making her artistic debut as part of the Epic Records family with the release of her tender “So & So” lyric video on Friday (May 15), which fittingly calls on a bunch of her famous friends like Selena Gomez and Rosalía to digitally complete her vision.
“It’s kind of exhilarating knowing that the world only sees what you want them to see. Up until now, I have chosen to express myself publicity in only certain areas of my creativity, so I am so excited to finally open the door and let people see another part of me,” the 28-year-old shares with Billboard. “This new phase of my career is about pushing limits and opening new doors. I am and always have been an overall creative, the world just didn’t know it yet.”
Music has always been a passion for Charm, as she recalls bonding with her brother over cutting tracks for fun while growing up. “So & So” will also serve as the lead single heading into her debut project for Epic. “My music is rooted in what moves me. I create music similar to the way I choreograph — it makes me feel good,” she explains. “Finally releasing my music is exposing a vulnerable side of me, which many have never seen.”
