On Thursday afternoon (April 23), the hip-hop community mourned the death of New York MC Fred the Godson, who died due to the coronavirus, according to his close collaborator Jaquae. He was 35.
“My little brother ooooh how sad am i, i prayed and prayed and prayed for you all night long,” Fat Joe wrote on Instagram. “So many dreams so many conversations so many great times we had. I am in shock to say the least i love you soooooooo much little brother it’s been years since i felt this pain. I always wanted the best for you, i played you all my important songs to get your feed back i respect you so much as an artist.”
Nas also expressed his grief on Instagram, writing: “Peace to you Fred The God Son on your ascension. Prayers to your family. Salute.”
Earlier this month, Fred announced his battle with COVID-19 when he posted a picture of himself in the hospital breathing through a ventilator. “I’min here with this Covid-19 shit! Please keep me in yy’all prayers!!! #GodIsGreat,””he captioned his post.
A member of the 2011 XXL Freshman class, Fred’s exemplary wordplay and smooth delivery made him a promising MC on the rise. In 2012, he released his ambitious mixtape City of God, hosted by DJ Drama. The tape included features from Diddy, Pusha T and Raekwon.
