Dennis Schroder reportedly turned down a hefty contract extension from the Los Angeles Lakers last season, instead opting to gamble on himself heading into free agency. As of today, Schroder appears to have lost that gamble, as he continues to search for a new team to land with.
Schroder has had some discussions recently about potentially signing with the Boston Celtics. According to ESPN’s Jordan Schultz, the Celtics have offered Schroder the $5.9 million taxpayer midlevel exception. Schroder wants the full midlevel exception of $9.5 million in addition to a second-year player option.
Schroder saw his value tumble in the playoffs as he averaged 14.3 points and 2.8 assists while shooting 30.8 percent from three-point range. And whatever leverage he once had entering the offseason is gone with a lot of teams already addressing their need for a point guard.

Accepting a one-year deal on a franchise for whom he can play a meaningful role might be Schroder’s best option now. The Celtics are without a true point guard right now. If Schroder takes the deal and balls out for the season, he could line himself up for a big payday next season.
