The character of Shang-Chi was created by Steve Englehart and Jim Starlin and first appeared in Marvel comic books in the 1970s to cash in on the popularity of Bruce Lee and the TV show Kung-Fu. However, in an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Liu explained that it was because the character is relatively unknown that made him so interesting to play.

“The most exciting thing about stepping into this character was that his backstory has never been told before,” he said. “We know so many different versions of Batman’s origin story, how his parents were murdered when he was very young. We know Peter Parker, who was bitten by a radioactive spider, and he loses his uncle. Shang-Chi’s story is very much unknown to most of the world, so we had a lot of freedom and creative liberty to make it the way that we wanted to.”

The movie was originally slated for release in February right around the Chinese New Year but thanks to COVID-19, the movie was pushed down for a September release.
