The DJ Akademiks vs. Freddie Gibbs Beef Explained

DJ Akademiks has been up to his usual problematic antics and went on an absolute rampage this past week. However, things went sour when he took aim at Freddie Gibbs and other celebrities. Not only has Akademiks made himself out to be a pariah but he’s also been banned from Twitch and suspended from his job at Complex.

Things kicked off last week when Gibbs appeared on The Bootleg Kev Podcast and had this to say about Jeezy: “Let’s be real, dawg. Did you listen to his last album? No you f***ing didn’t. He’s a legend but right now, you’re irrelevant.”

Soon after that, on his show, Everyday Struggle Akademiks fired back saying, “if Jeezy is irrelevant, Freddie Gibbs, you are absolutely irrelevant as well […] If Jeezy drop an album right now, he sell 50,000… Relevancy means is your music actually doing anything? And to be honest, other than the few people who f*** with Freddie Gibbs, what relevancy does he have?”

Akademiks’ comments didn’t carry any weight, as Gibbs’ latest album release Alfredo sold over 30,000 copies in its first week and peaked at No. 15 on the Billboard 200 chart. Nevertheless, Gibbs wasn’t going to let it slide, clapping back savagely in a series of Instagram posts and Twitter exchanges.

Fuelled by his beef with Gibbs, Akademiks descended into a downward spiral of nasty attacks against several pop culture personalities, including Drake and Meek Mill. But he seriously crossed the line when he took aim at Chrissy Teigen. During a Twitch stream, Akademiks decided to diss John Legend’s lackluster new record Big Love by spouting a misogynistic tirade against his wife, Teigen. “It’s bewildering to me. His b*tch be talking mad sh*t online. What’s…I dislike this b*tch so much, I can’t even lie to you.”

The messy and extremely sexist commentary swiftly resulted in Akademiks being suspended from the platform, until further notice, with no word on how long the ban will last.

Akademiks was subsequently suspended from Complex for his sexist rant. In response, the media personality issued an apology on Thursday – albeit, without saying Chrissy Teigen’s name. Akademiks claimed that he spoke to management at Complex about the comments as well as his Everyday Struggle co-host Nadeska Alexis and confirmed that he’ll be taking the next two episodes off.

Naturally, Freddie Gibbs had the last laugh.
