The music industry’s performative support of the Black Lives Matter movement has been called into question over the last week. It was pointed out that most labels were swift to embrace the #BlackoutTuesday campaign but failed to acknowledge their history of profiting off black art and culture while locking black artists into exploitative contracts and predatory deals.
Today, Bandcamp is waiving its June 5 revenue share, so fans can be sure that if they’re streaming music by black artists, those musicians will be seeing their income. On top of that, many labels and producers are donating their revenue share to racial justice movements such as the Black Lives Matter movement and the NAACP Legal Defense Fund.
