Gorillaz have linked with Skepta to pay tribute to the late Afrobeat legend Tony Allen in the animated band’s new track “How Far?”
Tony Allen passed away on April 30 at the age of 79. The Nigerian musician, and Fela Kuti’s longtime drummer, was largely credited with innovating Afrobeat and bringing it to a global audience. Allen was a close friend of Gorillaz frontman Damon Albarn, with the single “How Far?” marking a timely tribute to the late musician.
“How Far?,” the latest installment in Gorillaz’ Song Machine series, “was written and recorded with Skepta in London just before lockdown and is being shared immediately as a tribute to the spirit of a great man, Tony Allen,” the band shared in a statement.
Albarn paid tribute to Allen on Friday with a short video of the legendary drummer performing on stage during a concert. “There is no end – Tony Allen,” he captioned the tweet.
