‘The Boondocks’ Episode Retired by Adult Swim Due To “Cultural Sensitivities”

Adult Swim made the decision to pull episodes from The Boondocks and Aqua Team Hunger Force that they deemed “culturally insensitive.”

According to The Daily Beast, Adult Swim confirmed the removal on Tuesday after Reddit users noticed that episodes were missing from each show. The Boondocks episode “The Story of Jimmy Rebel” and the Aqua Team Hunger Force episode “Shake Like Me” were removed. “The Story of Jimmy Rebel” follows Uncle Rukus’ relationship with a racist country singer whose discography includes songs such as “Real N*****s Never Die” and “They Just Smell That Way.”

A representative from Adult Swim told The Daily Beast that the episodes have been permanently retired due to “cultural sensitivities.” The representative added that usually when episodes get taken from streaming services, it is done in collaboration with the show’s creators.

“When Adult Swim transitions series to a new platform we determine what episodes are selected through creative and cultural filters and our standards and practices policies. Oftentimes these decisions are made in collaboration with the show’s creator,” a rep for Adult Swim added.

At the time, Boondocks creator Aaron McGruder declined to comment.

This is just the latest in networks pulling episodes that have been deemed offensive. Over the summer, episodes of 30 Rock, Community, and It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, were pulled for featuring blackface.
