Following his first presidential rally in South Carolina Sunday (July 19) and a petition he circulated, Kanye West won’t appear on the state’s ballot.
South Carolina Election Commission officials confirmed to Newsweek that the rapper-turned-political candidate missed the deadline on Monday (July 20) after he failed to submit the petition he first tweeted out on Saturday (July 18). He needed at least 10,000 signatures to qualify to appear on South Carolina’s ballot.
On Sunday evening, West appeared at Charleston’s Exquis Event Center for his first-ever rally where he tearfully discussed his stance on abortion, gun control, the LGBTQ+ community, the Black community and more.
However, eligible voters in Oklahoma can check off his name on the state’s presidential ballot come November. The Associated Press confirmed he filed with the Federal Election Commission (FEC) and paid the $35,000 filing fee, according to Oklahoma Board of Elections spokeswoman Misha Mohr.
Despite West hitting another roadblock in his path to the presidency, he still has time to file and appear on four major states’ ballots: New York on July 30; Pennsylvania on August 3; Ohio on August 5; and California on August 6. West needs at least 30,000 signatures to qualify for New York’s presidential ballot.
