Lil Nas X on Why He Kept His Nicki Minaj Fandom on the DL: 'I Didn't Want People to Know I Was Gay'

Nicki responded on Wednesday (June 17), congratulating Lil Nas for “building up your confidence to speak your truth.”

For a long time it was rumored that Lil Nas X was behind the now-extinct Nicki Minaj fan page @nasmaraj, on which the page runner reached out to Nicki to ask for a feature.

On Tuesday (June 16), Nas X admitted that he was, in fact, a huge fan of Nicki Minaj, but kept it a secret. (He did not confirm that he ran the @nasmaraj fan page.)

“I didn’t want people to know I was gay tbh,” the Grammy-winning rapper tweeted by way of explaining why he kept his Nicki fandom a secret before he came out last year after someone asked “how come you never claimed her when people asked if you were a barb?? We all knew who you were.”

When a fan responded that “Being a barb don’t make you gay,” Lil Nas agreed, and seemed to imply that he did indeed run a fan page: “It don’t but people will assume if you had an entire fan page dedicated to nicki u are gay. and the rap/music industry ain’t exactly built or accepting of gay men yet.”

The best part? Nicki responded on Wednesday (June 17), tweeting, “It was a bit of a sting when you denied being a barb, but I understand. Congratulations on building up your confidence to speak your truth.” Lil Nas, of course, couldn’t believe he got a personal response, bowing down to his “generous queen” and explaining in further detail why he felt he had to keep his love under wraps.

@NICKIMINAJ the generous queen, i love u. and i’m sorry i did that in a time where u were already getting so much bandwagon hate,” he tweeted in response. “i felt so bad, hoping u wouldn’t see my denial. i was just so afraid of people finding out about me and losing everything before i even got a chance.”
